If you ski or snowboard in Utah, you already know that gearing up for a season on the Wasatch Front can be a significant investment. Quality skis, boots, helmets, jackets, and pants add up fast — and buying everything new at full retail is not the only option.
Every September, one of Salt Lake City's most beloved community events gives Utah skiers and riders a chance to find quality winter sports gear at a fraction of what it would cost in a shop — while supporting something genuinely worth supporting. The SBSEF Annual Ski and Snowboard Swap is back on September 19th, 2026, and whether you are gearing up a first-time skier, replacing equipment that has seen better days, or simply looking to stretch your ski budget further this season, this event is worth putting on your calendar now.
What Is the SBSEF Ski and Snowboard Swap?
The Ski and Snowboard Education Foundation — SBSEF — hosts this annual swap as both a community fundraiser and a service to Utah's outdoor recreation community. The mission is straightforward: give everyone in the Salt Lake Valley access to good, affordable winter sports equipment while raising funds for SBSEF's athlete scholarship program, which supports youth athletes competing in alpine, freeride, and snowboard disciplines across Utah.
Thirty percent of every sale made at the swap goes directly to that scholarship fund — which means every piece of gear you buy or sell is contributing to the next generation of Utah mountain athletes.
This is not just a garage sale with ski poles. It is a well-organized, community-driven event that has become one of the most anticipated items on the Salt Lake City outdoor recreation calendar every fall.
What You Will Find at the Swap
The SBSEF Swap carries new and used equipment for the entire family — and the selection is genuinely impressive. Whether you need a full setup from scratch or just one or two pieces to round out what you already have, the swap covers everything:
- Skis and snowboards
- Poles
- Boots
- Helmets
- Jackets and pants
- Gloves and accessories
- And more
The best selection goes to the early arrivals. Doors open at 8:00 AM — and if you want the widest range of options across sizes, styles, and price points, arriving early is the move.
Why the Swap Is Worth It for Families and Budget-Conscious Buyers
Utah's ski resorts are world class. The equipment needed to enjoy them does not have to be world class priced.
For families with growing kids who need new gear every season, the swap is one of the most practical solutions available in the Salt Lake Valley. Children outgrow boots and skis faster than they outgrow their enthusiasm for the mountain — and buying quality used equipment at the swap means you are not paying full retail for gear that will need to be replaced again in twelve months.
For adults looking to upgrade their setup, the swap regularly turns up high-quality equipment in excellent condition at prices that make the decision easy. And for anyone who has been putting off getting into skiing or snowboarding because of the upfront gear cost, the SBSEF Swap is one of the most accessible entry points in the region.
All major credit cards are accepted and no cash is required.
How to Donate and Sell Your Gear
If you have skis, boots, jackets, or other winter sports equipment sitting unused in your garage or storage, the swap gives you an easy way to turn that gear into money — and benefit SBSEF's scholarship fund in the process.
Drop-off is available at two convenient locations and times:
Tuesday through Thursday, September 15 to 17 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at The LiftHouse parking lot, 3700 Fort Union Boulevard, Salt Lake City.
Friday, September 19 from 12:00 to 5:00 PM at Churchill Junior High, 3450 E Oakview Drive, Millcreek, UT 84124.
The drop-off process has been designed to be as simple as possible. Drive up to the team tents and volunteers will be on hand to help you tag your items — no hauling gear into a building required. There is a $1 per item tag fee, and downloading and completing the Seller Inventory Form in advance will save you significant time at check-in.
Checks for all sold items will be mailed on Tuesday, October 1, 2026. Any gear that remains unsold and is not picked up by 4:30 PM on September 19th will be considered a donation and forwarded to another swap — so if you are not planning to pick up your unsold items, you can feel good knowing they will find their way to someone who needs them.

Why September Is the Right Time
September might feel early to be thinking about ski season, but that is exactly the point.
The best deals at the swap go to the buyers who show up prepared. And on the selling side, getting your gear tagged and into the swap before the event means it has maximum exposure to buyers across the Salt Lake Valley before the season kicks off.
With major lift upgrades coming to Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley, and Powder Mountain this season, the 2026-27 ski season is setting up to be one of the most anticipated in recent Utah history. Getting your gear sorted in September means you are ready the moment the snow starts falling on the Wasatch Range.
Supporting Youth Athletes in Utah
Perhaps the best reason of all to participate in the SBSEF Swap — whether as a buyer, a seller, or simply by spreading the word — is what it supports.
SBSEF's scholarship program gives Utah youth athletes in alpine competition, freeride, and snowboard the financial support they need to compete, develop, and pursue the sport they love. Thirty percent of every sale at the swap goes directly to that fund — making this one of the most impactful community events in the Salt Lake City outdoor recreation calendar.
The mountains we love in Utah produce extraordinary athletes. The SBSEF Swap is one of the ways the community invests in them.
