Most Salt Lake City residents are familiar with the valley's winter inversion season — those stretches of gray, stagnant air that settle into the Salt Lake Valley from December through February and make the city's air quality some of the worst in the nation. It is an annual conversation, well documented and widely discussed.

But there is a second, less talked-about air quality threat emerging along the Wasatch Front — one that does not follow a seasonal schedule, can arrive with little warning, and carries a different and in some ways more alarming set of health concerns.

Great Salt Lake dust storms are already happening. And as the lake continues to shrink, they are going to become more frequent, more intense, and harder to ignore.

What Is Happening to the Great Salt Lake?

The Great Salt Lake has lost more than half of its surface area over the last several decades. The causes are well established: prolonged drought, decades of water diversion for agriculture and development, and rising temperatures driven by broader climate shifts across the American West.

As the lake shrinks, it does not simply leave behind clean, dry land. It exposes thousands of acres of lakebed — a fine, mineral-rich sediment that has been accumulating on the floor of the lake for centuries, largely undisturbed.

That exposed lakebed is the source of the problem.

When wind moves across the dry lakebed — which in Utah happens regularly, particularly in spring and early summer — it picks up that fine sediment and carries it as a dust plume directly toward the Salt Lake Valley and the Wasatch Front communities that sit downwind. Some of these plumes have been large enough to be visible from space.

What Is Actually in the Dust?

This is where the Great Salt Lake dust storm issue moves beyond a visibility or air quality nuisance into something more serious.

The lakebed of the Great Salt Lake is not simply sand and salt. Over more than a century of mining, agricultural runoff, and industrial activity in and around the lake, the lakebed has accumulated a significant concentration of contaminants — including arsenic, mercury, selenium, and other heavy metals that settled into the lake over decades and have been largely inert while submerged under water.

When that sediment becomes airborne during a dust storm, those contaminants do not stay on the ground. They become fine particulate matter — particles small enough to bypass the body's natural defenses and penetrate deep into the lungs. For healthy adults, repeated exposure to this kind of particulate matter carries long-term respiratory and cardiovascular risks. For children, the elderly, and individuals with existing asthma or respiratory conditions, the concern is more immediate.

This is meaningfully different from a typical dust storm. The combination of fine particle size and heavy metal contamination makes Great Salt Lake dust a distinct public health concern — one that researchers and public health officials are increasingly taking seriously.

How Bad Can These Storms Get?

Great Salt Lake dust storms are not a theoretical future risk. They are already occurring, and some have been significant.

In recent years, dust plumes originating from the exposed lakebed have reached Salt Lake City and surrounding Wasatch Front communities, dramatically reducing air quality and visibility across the valley. The frequency and severity of these events is expected to increase as more lakebed becomes exposed.

What makes this particularly challenging for Salt Lake City residents is the context. Here is what residents along the Wasatch Front should know and do:

Check air quality before outdoor activity on windy days. The Utah Division of Air Quality provides real-time air quality data at air.utah.gov. On days when winds are picking up from the west and air quality readings are elevated, reducing time outdoors — particularly for vigorous physical activity — is a reasonable precaution.

Keep windows closed and HVAC systems running with quality air filters during high-dust events. Fine particulate matter can infiltrate homes through open windows and poor filtration. A high-quality MERV-rated filter in your home's HVAC system provides meaningful protection during dust events.

Take dust storm warnings seriously if you or a family member has asthma, a respiratory condition, or cardiovascular concerns. For vulnerable populations, Great Salt Lake dust events warrant the same level of caution as a high-inversion day in January.

Support Great Salt Lake restoration efforts. The most direct solution to the dust storm problem is a fuller lake. A higher lake level means less exposed lakebed, which means fewer and less severe dust events. Water conservation, support for lake restoration funding, and awareness of how individual water use contributes to the lake's health all matter in the long run.
